Civics education is at the foundation of Democracy Prep. Our mission has always been to educate citizen-scholars for success in the college of their choice and a life of active citizenship, and this responsibility extends to our communities beyond our schools. One of the ways we accomplish this is by encouraging everyone to exercise their right to vote, and to do that, our voting population must feel prepared.

The primaries for the New York City Mayoral election are quickly approaching and we want to make sure that all voters are ready to cast their ballots on June 22nd. Democracy Prep teamed up with Achievement First and Civic Builders to present the 2021 Mayoral Forum on Educational Equity in NYC on Monday, May 24th, which was a virtual conversation with 2021 Mayoral candidates about education, equity, and community in NYC. The public education system is vital to the betterment of our city and our country, as it ensures that every child has access to a quality education and is given the tools to succeed. A mayoral candidate’s stance on education is an essential component of their campaign, which is why education priorities must be at the forefront of the conversation.

With over 200 attendees strong, we are incredibly proud of the event’s success. Moderated by Myles MillerWNBC-TV Journalist and fellow Democracy Prep Bronx Prep High alum, we were joined by the following Mayoral candidates:

• Kathryn Garcia, former Commissioner of the Department of Sanitation

 Ray McGuire, former Citigroup Executive

Andrew Yang, founder of Venture for America and former 2020 Presidential candidate
