Congratulations are in order for the Democracy Prep at the Agassi Campus High School boys basketball team, who defeated Battle Mountain 72-48 to win the Nevada 2A state basketball championship.
On Tuesday, March 20, 2018, the team was recognized by the County Commissioner at the Clark County Board Meeting.
Not only did the boys take the championship title, they also broke the record for the largest margin of victory in a tournament game by beating Battle Mountain by 24 points.
In addition, the team set the record for the most three-pointers in a game, both individually and as a team. DPAC Senior Akeemis Williams made nine three-pointers during the game. As a team, the DPAC Blue Knights made 14 three-pointers. Players Najeeb Muhammad and Akeemis Williams were named Co-MVPs of the tournament.
Coach Trevor Diggs credits the team’s culture of hard work and dedication with preparing them for the win.
“We don’t have days off,” Coach Diggs said. “I accept nothing less than giving me your all. I believe in hard work and dedication. We work all summer and we work every day to get better at our craft.”
The DPAC basketball team finds ways to add in practice time to their school day during lunchtime.
“The work for this year started right after last year’s championship win,” Coach Diggs said. “We won on Saturday, and we had practice on Monday.”
Coach Diggs is thrilled to see his players’ relentless dedication and practice pay off in such a meaningful way.
“These kids work hard,” Coach Diggs said. “They work hard in the classroom and outside the classroom. I’m a teacher first. To see your kids put the work in and then when they get to the final game, they’re victorious, that’s what all the hard work is for.”
