This Friday, scholars around our network are participating in a number of service projects in remembrance of the tragedy our country experienced on September 11, 2001.
At Democracy Prep Harlem High School, scholars are creating a video to show during town hall, while scholars at Democracy Prep Harlem Middle SchoolDemocracy Prep Harlem Middle School will spend time writing letters to service members.
At Congress Heights Elementary located in Washington, D.C., our scholars will participate in a day of service with the Washington DC Service Platoons, a subset of The Mission Continues, an organization dedicated to empowering veterans facing the challenge of adjusting to life at home to find ways to support communities to through volunteering and service.
In addition to veterans, our DC scholars will be joined by local police and firefighters where they will spend the day building a brand new community garden, painting a large map of the US in one of the outdoor play areas, revitalizing the school’s exterior front, painting the DP Congress Heights shield on a wall, and learning about the meaning and history of September 11th.
Democracy Prep Congress Heights was an obvious choice for a partnership, says Mary Beth Bruggeman the Executive Director, Southeast Region of The Mission Continues.
“The staff has been incredibly supportive and understand the value that we, as veterans, bring to the table for the school,” she says. “They also had great ideas of what they’d like done with a large group of volunteers, and the kids were excited to contribute their own brainstorming and creativity.”
Additional volunteers are needed! Go here to find out more information about how you can support our scholars with this service project in DC. Snacks, water, and lunch will be provided and supporter Booz Allen Hamilton is sponsoring a giveaway of 2 pairs of tickets for the Nationals vs. Phillies game on Friday, September 25 to attendees of this project.
